WarEagles Roll Tide!

The last season of college football before the playoffs begin next season will not end how you thought. The Auburn Tigers stunned the Alabama Crimson Tide and the rest of the nation Saturday evening with a 108-yard kick return for a TD on a last second field goal attempt by the Crimson Tide.

Auburn won the Iron Bowl in dramatic fashion at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, AL. The game started with only 1 score allowed in the 1st quarter, a 45-yard run by Auburn Tigers QB Nick Marshall. The 2nd quarter is when Alabama seemed to get the ball rolling, scoring 21 straight points (2 pass TD's by QB AJ McCarron, and 1 rush TD by RB TJ Yeldon) before Auburn would score again (rush TD by RB Tre Mason), giving us a Alabama lead 21-14 going into halftime.

The Tigers would score on their opening drive of the 2nd half on a Marshall pass to WR CJ Uzomah for a 13-yard TD. Both teams would go scoreless the rest of the 3rd quarter with Alabama starting a drive from their own 1 yard line that started with 6:07 left in the 3rd, that ended in the 4th with a 83-yard drive to Auburn's 16 yard line capped off by a missed field goal by senior K Cade Foster. The Tide made up for that disappointment on their next possession. They began on their 1 yard line just as their previous drive but this time they made their attack swiftly with a 99-yard TD pass to WR Amari Cooper, that set the record for the longest TD pass in Alabama history. The Tigers special teams blocked a field goal later in the quarter, their second of the game (also blocked a field goal attempt in the 3rd quarter) that helped set up a game tying TD pass to WR Sammie Coates who was wide open because Alabama was too busy trying to chase down Marshall.

The score was now even at 28 apiece and Alabama had the ball with 0:32 seconds left in the game. The Tide began their drive on their own 29 yard line with a 2 rush plays by Yeldon for 33 yards that set them up at Auburn's 38 with 1 second left on the clock. Alabama sent out freshman K Adam Griffith and Auburn coach Gus Malzahn attempted his "ice the kicker" time out. Well it just may have worked out because after everyone on Alabama's team had realized it was short they began to look off the field as if they were going to overtime. Auburn took that opportunity and ran with it, literally, when senior CB Chris Davis returned the missed attempt over 100 yards for a game winning TD.
Final Score:
AUB over ALA 34-28

Alabama had given up on average only about 91 yards per game on the ground, but Auburn was able to run all over the Tide for 296 rush yards, the most given up by Alabama since 2011. Most of those yards were gained by Auburn RB Tre Mason, who was able to rush for 164 yards on 29 attempts. Alabama had also missed their only 4 field goal attempts Saturday, the first team to miss that many field goals in a game since last season.

Nick Saban has now played Auburn 12 times as a head coach and has an overall record of 6-6, with all of his losses coming when the Auburn Tigers have over 9 wins in a season.
